Thesis Proposal [Revised]

Full Document (pdf)
Executive Summary (pdf)

The purpose of this updated proposal is to revise the previosly defined scope of the systems being considered for this Spring Semester. This document describes alternative technologies to provide both heating and cooling to The Mirenda Center.

General Thesis Information

The annual cost of the DX-Roof Top Air Handling units is significant, approximately $150,000 per year for cooling mode and $7000 per for heating mode.  The problem is that the electric utility costs for are expensive, which drive the cost of cooling up. The Mirenda Center could take advantage of the 52 °F ground temperature for free cooling with a geothermal cooling system. This system will be explored.

Master's Criteria

A life cycle cost analysis of the geothermal system will be proformed and compared to the exisiting system. These calculation techniques are taught in AE 557 & AE 558.

Breadths

My two breadth's will be integrated into the design of a small 600 sq ft mezzanine level in the main entry of The Mirenda Center. This mezzanine level will require structural analysis and lighting analysis. Both of these areas will be explored inorder to achieve the design of this mezzanine. The overall goal is to reclaim vertical space that is lost due to having such a large ceiling height. This area will serve a cafe lounge and study space for students.
